The Nature Tech Collective is working with Impact Labs to develop a Nature Tech Taxonomy for the benefit of all. Today we’re releasing our first public version of the proposed framework, with more iterations to follow. The taxonomy builds upon the work of One Earth, The Stockholm Resilience Centre, and The Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures.

Developing a nature tech taxonomy for all

To fully mobilize the transition towards a nature-positive economy, we need to accelerate and scale the implementation of nature tech solutions that can address the challenges currently hindering progress. We define nature tech as any technology that enables, accelerates, and scales the nature positive transition.

As regulatory pressures mount and more companies acknowledge the importance of assessing and mitigating nature-related risks, nature tech offers essential tools for accurate data collection, monitoring, mapping, reporting, stakeholder engagement, and driving action. 

As the nature tech market grows, the need for a shared language and lexicon is becoming more apparent.

The goals of the Nature Tech Taxonomy project:

• Enable nature tech solution providers to identify themselves within a broader category of reference.

• Help stakeholders navigate quickly to the right nature tech solutions for their needs.

• Present a clear overview of the emerging nature tech ecosystem for unfamiliar audiences. 

The vision

The final output of the taxonomy project is imagined as an AI-driven digital search tool, enabling a seamless navigation of the nature tech ecosystem via high-level category filters, and additional subcategories such as geography, industry, and more. We invite you to collaborate with us on this project and download our Taxonomy whitepaper .

Introducing Version 0.6

We’ve structured our initial taxonomy framework according to three dimensions, foundational to our understanding of nature tech: Nature, Tech, Transitions. These lenses are independent yet complementary, enabling users to explore the ecosystem from different entry points according to their needs.

Harnessing nature tech for a nature positive future

We are facing an urgent polycrisis. 6 out of 9 planetary boundary limits have been passed and we are losing nature at an alarming rate. If we fail to safeguard our natural world, the predicted cost is staggering. The global economy could lose trillions as the impacts of nature loss and biodiversity decline cascade through systems.

Our theory of change is that a mature and widely adopted nature tech category is essential for the nature positive transition. By practically helping to size and map the nature tech ecosystem, the Nature Tech Collective aims to strengthen collaboration, spread knowledge, and drive towards real change.
